There’s a strange kind of calm to an aquarium. Everything is moving, but somehow everything feels slower. The blue light, the shadows dancing across the walls, fish drifting past the glass without much concern for what’s happening on the other side of it. For Jess and Daniel, it made for a pretty good excuse to forget about the camera for a while.
Between the darker tunnels and the glow of the tanks, the afternoon had its own little rhythm. Some things caught their attention for a few seconds, others kept them there much longer than expected. And every now and then, there was one of those completely unplanned moments that makes you remember why doing something together is so much more interesting than simply standing somewhere and smiling at a camera.
Somewhere A Little Unusual
There’s something about choosing a place that already has a story of its own. A record shop with songs you’ve forgotten about, a bookshop you could disappear into for an hour, an aquarium glowing blue beneath the city; somewhere that gives you things to notice and little reasons to linger.
You’re not arriving with a list of poses to get through. You’re wandering, getting distracted, finding something that makes you laugh, stopping for a closer look. The afternoon has room to unfold around you, and somewhere in amongst all of that, there are photographs being made. The kind that feel less like you stepped out of your day to have your picture taken, and more like someone happened to capture you in the middle of it.
Make a day of Melbourne
One of my favourite things about shooting in Melbourne is how quickly the scenery can change. You can go from a calm aquarium and quiet laneways, to busy streets and loud roads, old buildings to modern glass, a hidden little café next to the river — all within the same afternoon. It means a couples session can keep moving rather than feeling like you’ve arrived at one location, taken your photos and gone home. Pick a few places you love, leave some room for detours, and let Melbourne become part of the story.
Your couples session can be a little different
For me, couples photos aren't about finding a pretty spot and spending an hour trying to look natural in front of a camera. Sometimes the best sessions are built around something you’d actually want to do together, like throwing it back to the 90s by going rollerskating, or taking the scenic route somewhere you’ve never been.
It gives you something to talk about, somewhere to wander and little things to get distracted by. The photos become part of the day, rather than the whole reason for it.
That’s the kind of session I love creating: less like a photoshoot, more like a date.

Cinematic couples photography inspired by your story

My photography is inspired by romance films, nostalgic novels and the beauty found in everyday moments.
Rather than directing every pose in my couples sessions, I offer gentle prompts that encourage natural movement and genuine interaction. The result is a gallery that feels cinematic without feeling overly posed. Images filled with laughter, quiet glances and the little details that make your relationship uniquely yours.
The Part You'll Remember
The best part of making a date of your session is that the photographs become tied to an actual little adventure. Years from now, you might not remember every street you wandered down or exactly what made you stop along the way, but you’ll remember that afternoon — where you went, what you found, what made you laugh, and how you felt being there together.
And that’s what I love about photographing couples this way. You’re not just creating photos to remember yourselves by. You’re creating another story to remember.
Dreaming of a Date-Inspired Couples Session?
Your session doesn't have to look like anyone else's. Choose somewhere that feels like home, spend an afternoon doing something you genuinely love together, and I'll quietly document it as it unfolds. If you're looking for a Melbourne couples photographer who believes the best photographs come from simply being together, I'd love to help tell your story.
Whether you’re planning an engagement session, celebrating an anniversary, or simply want photographs of the two of you as you are now, I approach every session with the same focus on making it relaxed, personal and completely your own.
If you’re looking for couples photography in Melbourne that feels more like an experience than a traditional photoshoot, you can find out more about my couples sessions here.

FAQ
Where can we have a couples photography session in Melbourne?
Pretty much anywhere that feels like you. Melbourne has everything from city streets and hidden laneways to the Dandenong Ranges, Mornington Peninsula, beaches, cafés, bookstores and quirky local spots like record stores. We can choose somewhere meaningful to you or find a location that suits the mood you’re after.
We feel awkward in front of the camera. Will you tell us what to do?
Of course. You don't need any modelling experience or know how to pose. I'll gently guide you when you need it, but the focus is never on performing for the camera. Instead, I'll encourage you to interact naturally, giving you space to laugh, talk, wander, and simply enjoy being together while I quietly document everything as it unfolds.
How long does a couples session take?
Most sessions run between one and three hours. One hour is perfect for an intimate session focused on couple portraits, while two-three hours gives us more time to explore the location, try different setups and really settle into a relaxed rhythm - which almost always produces the best images.
What should we wear for an aquarium couples photoshoot?
Keep it comfortable and fairly simple — earthy neutrals, denim and soft textures work beautifully against the darker aquarium setting and blue light. You don’t need to match; just choose colours that complement each other and outfits you can comfortably wander around in.
