The most memorable dates are often the simplest ones; wandering somewhere new, sharing a quiet conversation over coffee, watching the sunset together, or finding a place that feels like your own little escape.
Melbourne is filled with beautiful experiences for couples who want to slow down and reconnect. Whether you’re planning something special, celebrating a milestone, or simply looking for a thoughtful way to spend time together, these romantic date ideas are perfect for creating moments you’ll want to remember.

Get Lost in a Bookstore & Share a Coffee

There’s something quietly romantic about wandering through shelves of books together. Pick out books for each other, find a cosy corner, talk about your favourite stories and finish the afternoon with coffee somewhere nearby.

A bookstore date is perfect for couples who enjoy slower moments and meaningful conversations. It’s not about having a packed itinerary, it’s about creating space to simply enjoy being together.
A + T's day in Belgrave was exactly this - a wholesome morning spent enjoying each other's company and bonding over a shared love of literature, and exploring the streets of the town they grew up in. I had to write a blog post covering such a fun day, of course - head here to delve into their story.
Perfect for: book lovers, rainy-day dates and couples who love cosy, nostalgic moments.

The Ultimate Rainy Day Date

Step into another world for the day and trade the usual coffee date for something a little more memorable. Wander hand in hand beneath the ocean tunnels, get lost watching the underwater world around you, and don’t forget to stop by the photobooth for a little keepsake to take home. A simple date idea that feels like a little escape from everyday life; full of curiosity, laughter, and moments you’ll want to remember.
This is a special one to me; it was one of mine and my partner's first dates when we reunited in Melbourne (alongside the Lightscape in the Botanical Gardens), and it's always fun to explore the city afterwards!
Roller Skating; A Playful Date Full of Nostalgia
Who doesn't love a roller skating date? Whether you’re confidently gliding around together or laughing as you try to stay balanced, it’s the kind of experience that naturally brings out connection and personality.
A roller rink creates a nostalgic, playful atmosphere where you can let your guard down, be a little silly and enjoy being present with each other. It’s a date that feels less like a plan and more like a memory in the making; full of movement, laughter and moments you’ll want to hold onto.
If you're feeling persuaded, head over to my blog post where I talk all about our rollerskating session at Lilydale Skate Centre.

Perfect for: couples who love a little adventure, nostalgic experiences and dates that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Explore the Dandenong Ranges
Escape the city for the day and wander amongst towering trees, fern-lined paths and peaceful forest trails. The Dandenong Ranges are perfect for couples who enjoy exploring together and finding quiet moments away from the everyday.
Stop for coffee afterwards, visit a garden, or simply take your time wandering without a plan. Sometimes the best dates are the ones where you’re not rushing anywhere.
Top tip: Alfred Nicholas Gardens are my favourite to visit, especially in autumn!
Perfect for: nature lovers, adventurous couples and those who love a little escape.
Share Something You Both Love

Some of the most meaningful dates aren't about going somewhere new — they're about spending time doing something that already feels like you. Browse a record store and pick out vinyl for each other, spend an afternoon hunting for comic books, play the piano together, or lose track of time over a shared hobby you both love.
These kinds of dates aren't about impressing each other; they're about slowing down and enjoying the little things that make your relationship unique. The places and activities that already hold meaning often become the ones you'll remember most.

Perfect for: couples who want a date that feels personal, nostalgic and uniquely their own.
Pack a Picnic & Watch the Sunset
A picnic is one of those simple dates that can feel incredibly special with a little thought. Bring your favourite snacks, a blanket, a playlist, a bottle of wine or even handwritten notes for each other.
Melbourne has endless beautiful spots for a sunset picnic, from gardens and parks to coastal views. It’s the perfect excuse to put your phones away, slow down and enjoy the little moments.
Perfect for: relaxed couples, golden hour lovers and anyone wanting a classic romantic date.
Visit a Local Market & Spend the Morning Exploring
Markets make for an easy, relaxed date where you can wander, discover new things and enjoy each other’s company without needing a strict plan.
Pick up fresh produce, try something new, find a handmade treasure or simply enjoy a slow morning together. These everyday moments often become the ones you remember most.
Top tip: The Lost Woods Market in Emerald is a must visit, running on the 3rd Sunday of every month.

Perfect for: food lovers, weekend explorers and couples who enjoy simple experiences.

Go for a Scenic Walk Somewhere New
A walk might sound simple, but it’s one of the best ways to reconnect. Without distractions, conversations naturally unfold and you have space to enjoy being together.
Explore a new trail, walk beside the water or find a quiet park you’ve never visited before. The destination matters less than the time spent together.
One of my favourite things to do to reconnect with my partner is a walk in nature, just the two of us (and maybe his parent's dogs).

Perfect for: couples who love meaningful conversations and low-key adventures.

FAQ
How far do you travel for couples sessions?
I photograph couples sessions throughout Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and surrounding areas. Travel is included for locations within my usual service area (50km from 3810), with further locations available for a small fee.
We feel awkward in front of the camera. Will you tell us what to do?
Of course. You don't need any modelling experience or know how to pose! I'll gently guide you when you need it, but the focus is never on performing for the camera. Instead, I'll encourage you to interact naturally, giving you space to laugh, talk, wander, and simply enjoy being together while I quietly document everything as it unfolds.
Can we turn one of these dates into a couples photography session?
I would love to! Many of my couples sessions are built around real experiences rather than traditional poses. Whether it's a picnic, exploring the coastline, wandering through a bookstore or sharing a hobby together, documenting a date is a beautiful way to create photographs that feel unique to you.
What are some affordable date ideas for couples?
Some of the most meaningful dates don't have to cost much at all. A walk through the forest, a beach sunset, a picnic, visiting a local market, or spending the afternoon exploring your favourite record store or bookstore can be just as memorable as an expensive night out.
