Some sessions come together exactly as you imagined them. This was one of those.
This retro rollerskating couples session in Lilydale was born from a collab between myself and a fellow photographer - two creatives, one shared vision, and a couple who showed up and absolutely nailed it.
They already knew how to skate, which meant this felt less like a photoshoot and more like tagging along on the most fun date in the Dandenong Ranges. These two brought the sweetest energy - genuinely loving, totally at ease, and completely in their element from the moment they laced up.

A Collab, A Creative Vision & A Very Fun Couple

This one started as a conversation between myself and a fellow photographer, Rach (@rachwhitephotography). We shared a love of nostalgia, retro aesthetics, and the kind of photography that feels more like a first date than a shoot.

We wanted rollerskates, we wanted the Yarra Valley, and we needed a couple who could match the energy. Spoiler: we found exactly that.

From the moment they arrived these two just got it. Sweet, genuinely loving, and completely at ease with each other - the kind of couple where the connection is so natural that all you have to do is point a camera in their direction and something beautiful happens.
Their energy perfectly matched the nostalgic, warm aesthetic we were going for, and watching them together was a reminder of exactly why I love what I do.
The Details That Made It
Every great styled session has those little details that tie the whole aesthetic together, and this one was no exception.
Wired earphones straight out of a childhood bedroom playlist, comic books dog-eared at the best pages, a vintage Canon Powershot that felt right at home in their hands, and glass Coke bottles that looked like they'd been pulled straight from a corner store in 1997.
Nothing was overthought, nothing was forced; just a collection of nostalgic details that made the whole scene feel completely lived in.

What if we're nervous about being photographed?
Almost every couple tells me this before their session. The good news is you don't need to know how to pose or spend the whole time looking at the camera. I'll gently guide you when needed, but most of the session is simply the two of you skating, talking, laughing, and enjoying the date you've carved out together. Before long, you'll forget the camera is even there.
What should we wear for a rollerskating couples session?
Think retro and fun! This is your chance to lean into the nostalgic aesthetic. Vintage-inspired pieces, bold colours, high-waisted jeans, fun prints and anything with a 70s or 80s flavour all photograph beautifully in a rink setting. Comfort matters too since you'll be moving around, so make sure whatever you wear you can actually skate in!

Do we need modelling experience?
Not at all. Most couples you see on my website have never been professionally photographed before. My approach is relaxed and guided, focusing on genuine connection rather than stiff poses. I'll gently direct you throughout the session so you can focus on enjoying the experience together.
