Some stories begin long before the camera is raised. This Phantom of the Opera inspired editorial came from a shared vision between myself and another photographer (Jade; @valhallavisuals) — a love for storytelling, timeless romance, and the magic of musical theatre. Having grown up performing in theatre, I’ve always been drawn to the emotion and drama of the stage, and bringing that feeling into a photography setting felt incredibly special.
Rather than recreating the story scene for scene, we wanted to capture its atmosphere: candlelight, dramatic shadows, timeless details and the feeling of a love story suspended somewhere between fantasy and reality.
Echoes of a Forgotten Estate
Hidden within the Dandenong Ranges, Doongalla has a rich history that adds to its quiet, timeless atmosphere. Once home to the grand Doongalla Homestead, the estate was owned by Sir James Grimwade before the house was destroyed by fire in 1932.
Today, nature has gently reclaimed the landscape. Winding paths weave through towering trees, and the original stone steps that once formed the grand entrance to the homestead still remain, hinting at the grandeur that once stood here. With its secluded corners, lingering history and slightly mysterious charm, it felt like the perfect setting for a story inspired by The Phantom of the Opera; a place where the past is never quite forgotten.
Bringing the Characters to Life
Rather than recreating the characters exactly as they appear on stage, this editorial was inspired by the emotions they represent. Christine's quiet grace and curiosity are contrasted with the Phantom's mystery and longing, creating a story that feels both romantic and bittersweet.
Every choice, from the wardrobe to the way they moved together, was guided by those emotions. Flowing fabrics echoed Christine's softness, while darker tones and subtle vintage details reflected the Phantom's hidden world. Instead of dramatic poses, the focus was on quiet glances, gentle movement and the moments that exist between words.
It wasn't about retelling The Phantom of the Opera scene by scene. It was about capturing the tension between light and shadow, hope and heartache, and creating photographs that felt as though they had been lifted from the pages of a timeless gothic romance.
The Details That Told the Story
The smallest details are often what make a story feel believable, so every prop and styling choice was selected with intention. Rather than simply decorating the scene, each element helped build a world that felt timeless, romantic and quietly mysterious.
Flickering candles echoed the warmth and intimacy of the opera house, while scattered rose petals and aged sheet music paid homage to the story's theatrical roots. Antique-inspired jewellery, delicate lace and flowing fabrics added softness and elegance, balancing the darker, more dramatic elements of the editorial.
Chasing Light and Shadow
Light played a key role in creating the atmosphere of this editorial. Inspired by the dramatic contrast of The Phantom of the Opera, we wanted the images to feel intimate, mysterious and timeless; balancing soft moments of warmth with deeper shadows.
The natural light filtering through the trees at Doongalla created pockets of brightness and movement, while a fog machine added an ethereal layer to the scene, allowing the landscape to feel almost dreamlike. As the light faded, the shadows grew deeper, enhancing the sense of mystery and turning each frame into a moment from a forgotten love story.

Of course. You don't need any modelling experience or know how to pose. I'll gently guide you when you need it, but the focus is never on performing for the camera. Instead, I'll encourage you to interact naturally, giving you space to laugh, talk, wander, and simply enjoy being together while I quietly document everything as it unfolds.
Do couples sessions have to follow a specific theme?
