There’s a particular kind of nervousness that comes with knowing you’re about to ask the biggest question of your life.
You’ve got the ring hidden, you’ve thought through how you’re going to do it, and now you just have to act completely normal while secretly knowing that everything is about to change.
That was the feeling hanging in the air at Montsalvat for T + R's surprise proposal. Among the old stone buildings and winding paths of the grounds, a seemingly ordinary moment was about to become the beginning of something new. And then came the question, the surprise, the hug, and the realisation that they were leaving Montsalvat with a wedding to plan, and family to celebrate with.
Why Montsalvat Is Such a Beautiful Proposal Location
Montsalvat is unlike most places around Melbourne. Rather than feeling like a traditional wedding venue or manicured garden, it has layers of history and character everywhere you look.
The site is home to Australia’s oldest continuously operating artist community, established in 1934, with dozens of historic buildings spread throughout its grounds. Its architecture was built using clay, stone and salvaged materials, giving the whole place an imperfect, handmade quality that photographs beautifully.
There are stone walls, arches, gardens, pathways and tucked-away corners to move through, which means the photographs don't all have to look like they happened in the same place.
More importantly, it has atmosphere.
For a proposal, that matters. You don't need an elaborate setup or hundreds of flowers to make the moment feel special when you're surrounded by somewhere with this much character.
Letting the Moment Unfold
One of my favourite parts of photographing a proposal is the few minutes when the person being proposed to has absolutely no idea I’m there.
I’ll usually hide in plain sight, finding a spot where I can see what’s happening without making myself part of the moment ( likely with my partner in tow as a scapegoat). There’s no need for me to step in straight away. Instead, I let things unfold naturally and quietly photograph what’s happening — the nervous glances, the little conversations, the walk towards the spot, and eventually the moment they realise what’s about to happen.
And once the question has been asked, I still don’t immediately turn it into a photoshoot.
I give you a little time to just be there. To hug, laugh, look at the ring, take it all in and probably say “oh my god” about twenty times. Those first few minutes afterwards are often some of my favourite photographs because you’re not thinking about the camera at all. You’re simply reacting to what has just happened.
Only once the excitement has settled do I introduce myself properly and gently guide you into a more relaxed portrait session around Montsalvat.
From there, I’ll give you prompts and little things to do together rather than asking you to hold a pose and smile at the camera. The result is a mix of photographs that document the surprise exactly as it happened, followed by beautiful portraits of the two of you now that you can finally celebrate being engaged.
Making the Most of a Montsalvat Proposal
One of the reasons I love Montsalvat for proposals is that the setting gives us plenty to work with afterwards. Rather than photographing the proposal and immediately disappearing, we can take a little time to wander through the grounds and let the adrenaline settle.
The historic buildings and gardens give us a mixture of textures and backdrops, from old stone and timber to greenery and quieter pathways. Montsalvat itself describes the site as covering around 12 acres, with dozens of heritage-listed buildings and different green spaces throughout.
That means the photographs can naturally shift from the intensity of the proposal into something softer. Walking together, looking at the ring, laughing about what just happened, stopping for a proper hug, and eventually, simply enjoying being engaged.
It becomes less about creating a collection of “proposal photos” and more about documenting the beginning of this new chapter.
Planning Your Proposal at Montsalvat

Montsalvat is a private heritage site and professional photography requires permission from the venue. Photography and filming bookings need to be arranged with Montsalvat in advance, and applicable photography fees may apply.

Absolutely. I can help you think through the location, timing and where I can position myself so I’m close enough to capture the moment without giving the surprise away. You don't need to have every detail figured out before getting in touch!
Will my partner know you’re the photographer?
Not necessarily! For the proposal itself, I can stay hidden in plain sight and photograph from a distance so your partner doesn't realise what is about to happen. Once the proposal is over and the secret is out, I'll introduce myself and we can start taking photographs together.
Do we have to pose after the proposal?
Not in the traditional sense! I’ll guide you with natural prompts and movement rather than asking you to stand and smile at the camera. We can wander around Montsalvat, look at the ring, talk, laugh and enjoy being newly engaged while I photograph what happens naturally.
How long should we allow for proposal photography?
I recommend allowing some time both before and after the actual proposal. The proposal itself may only take a few minutes, but having time afterwards means we can capture the reactions, hugs and excitement before exploring Montsalvat for some relaxed engagement portraits.
My proposal package allows 2 hours for everything, which is the perfect amount of time.
What happens if my partner spots you?
That's part of the fun of surprise proposals! I usually try to bring my partner along, so we can blend in and look like visitors to the area. Hiding in plain sight is a much better alternative than suspiciously crouching in a bush. Just before the big moment, it's very likely that you're both in your own bubble, not paying attention to anyone else, so don't worry!
Can we take engagement photos at Montsalvat after the proposal?
Yes, subject to the venue's photography permissions. Once the surprise is over, we can use the surrounding architecture, gardens and pathways for a relaxed set of newly engaged photographs while everything is still feeling fresh and exciting.
